How do i go about having a sculpted Elephant with real ivory husks appraised?
The elephant has a bronze body and weighs about 10 lbs. The detail is magnificently done. The husks are made from ivory. I believe this piece is very rare because of the ivory.
I have pictures if they are needed to give a more accurate appraisal.
I think you mean tusks.
Nobody reputable will give you an appraisal on line most likely.
First, gather all the provenance on this piece you can find. If you bought it where, from whom, when, how much, do you have bill of sale, previous provenance, or if you bought from artist, any supporting info. If nothing, or you picked it up at a bazaar overseas, or inherited it, you should put all the data in writing, take it to a notary, and have your statement notarized.
then look up fine art appraisers in your yellow pages or on line and contact them with the provenance info, including any markings, or identifying marks, dimensions, photos, and ask for an appraisal. They charge for their work - you get what you pay for. If it is considered valuable, then get a certification for insurance or sales purposes. If you want to sell it, you can put it on consigment with a dealer or gallery who specializes in this sort of thing - they charge about 40-50% of the selling price for a commission. They usually do not buy it outright themselves. Ifnot considered fine art, perhaps a decorator... or try to sell on e-bay. Be aware that selling ivory products now has some specifications due to new laws. check them out or ask the appraiser if they know of any problem that may arise....good luck.
